Allotment of shops at Kallikudi almost over

The Central Market for Vegetables, Fruits and Flowers at Kallikudi will start functioning by the end of June.


As an important step of shifting wholesale traders of Gandhi Market, the Tiruchi Agricultural Market Committee has completed the allotment of shops at the Central Market for Vegetables, Fruits and Flowers at Kallikudi.

A senior official of the district administration told The Hindu that a committee consisting of Deputy Director of Agricultural Marketing, Secretary, Tiruchi Agricultural Market Committee, Assistant Commissioner of Tiruchi City Corporation (Ariamangalam zone) and Accounts Officer, Horticultural Department, which was constituted to scrutinise the applications received from Gandhi Market traders, has almost completed its task.

Out of the 1,638 applications, around 330 applicants were found to be wholesale traders of Gandhi Market. They have been allotted shops in the ground floor of Kallikudi market. Most of the other applicants were retail traders and pavement traders in Gandhi market. Shops have been allotted only to genuine wholesale traders.

He said the details of allotees would be announced soon.

They would be asked to move to their respective shops in a few days so as to enable them to create necessary arrangements for transacting business.

Stating that the market would start functioning by the end of June, the official said that once it was done, the lorries carrying vegetable and fruits to Tiruchi would not be allowed to offload at Gandhi Market. They would be directed to Kallikudi market.

As far as allotment of shops on the first floor was concerned, he said that a fresh announcement would be made so that retail traders of Gandhi Market could submit applications. It has also been decided to reserve four or five shops for the Farmers' Producers Companies.
