Tiruchy-Musiri-Namakkal four lane highway caught in Red Tape
THE plan for conversion of Tiruchy-Musiri-Namakkal stretch into a four lane highway has not moved forward with the files not being cleared yet. This is one of the busiest stretches in central Tamil Nadu and converting it into four lanes would reduce congestion and travel time by a large extent. The movement of a large number of trucks in this 70-km stretch results in wear and tear and Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami during his visit in October announced that the stretch would be converted into a four lane highway.
Though the National High-ways Authority of India (NHAI) has submitted a proposal for developing the stretch and the government had accepted, nothing much has moved on the ground. "The government has to acquire land before handing the project over to NHAL Currently, Tiruchy-Musiri-Namakkal is under the State government's control. So, after the completion of land acquisition, the government must transfer it to the Min-istry of Road Transport and Highways. The Union ministry will then issue a government order and NHAI will take up expansion of it," said sources. "As per the proposal, Tiruchi-Namakkal stretch will be handed over to Project Implementation Unit of NHAI. But we have not received any such orders," said sources.
