Tiruchi residents gear up for ‘plogging’
Tiruchi Corporation likely to be the first civic body in the State to launch the initiative
Some 500 residents of the city have registered to take part in ‘plogging,’ a combination of physical exercise and picking up litter, to be launched on April 22. Plogging has caught on ever since Swedes made it fashionable to pick up trash while jogging.
Tiruchi Corporation is said to be the first civic body in the State to launch the initiative, which seeks to create plogging groups in different parts of the city to clear litter.
The Corporation has already opened a Facebook page, Trichy Plogging . Many active users of social media have come forward to take part in the initiative. Most of them are apartment dwellers. The number is likely to exceed 1,000 in a day or two. Anticipating a good response, the civic body has planned to purchase 2,000 T-shirts for distribution to participants.
Collector K. Rajamani is expected to launch the initiative on Cauvery bridge, where a large number of residents of Periyar Nagar, Ganapathy Nagar, Mambalasalai and Mela Chinthamani go on their morning walks.
Corporation Commissioner N. Ravichandran told The Hindu that participants had selected locations for plogging. Hence, arrangements would be made to organise the activity in locations of their choice. The participants would be asked to form plogging groups in different names.
“It is the best way to burn calories as the participants will have to frequently bend to collect trash all along their route. Since it involves a group of likeminded persons, the monotony associated with jogging will vanish. Moreover, they will get a feeling that they have done something to keep their surroundings neat and clean,” Mr. Ravichandran said.
“This is not going to be a one-day affair. A mechanism will be devised to motivate people to carry on plogging as part of their daily routine,” he added.
