Samayapuram temple car fest attracts large number of devotees

Religious fervour permeated Samayapuram town near here as devotees in large numbers congregated at the Arulmigu Mariamman Temple on Tuesday on the occasion of the Chithirai temple car festival and offered worship to the goddess.

The temple car festival celebrated in the Tamil month 'Chithirai' is one of the important events at the shrine attracting devotees from various parts of the State.

The 13-day Chithirai festival commenced at the temple on April 8 with the hoisting of the holy flag.

On the 10th day of the festival, the idol of Goddess Mariamman was placed in the decorated wooden temple car and pulled by a large number of devotees around the shrine. The temple car was pulled after 10.30 a.m. and it took over nearly six hours for it to return to its base.

A heavy posse of police personnel was deployed at Samayapuram and its vicinity to regulate the crow and traffic. The Chithirai festival concludes on April 20 with the Theppam festival.
