Trichy Corporation lists top 100 property tax defaulters

Blaming the civic body for its failure to implement infrastructure projects is quite easy but are we sure that all residents have been paying their property taxes promptly? Trichy Corporation has listed the top 100 property tax defaulters in the city who altogether owe the civic body around Rs 2.63 crore in recent years.

With 20% of the revenue of the corporation depending on the property tax collected from residents, including hospitals, commercial establishments, and even medical professionals, the corporation is set to recover the tax due amounting to Rs 44 crore. Next to the funds sanctioned by the state government, corporation sources said, property tax was the major source of revenue for the civic body to undertake the infrastructure projects. To recover the dues, corporation has listed the top 100 defaulters on the civic body’s official website www.trichycorporation.gov.in.

At least three doctors, four renowned hospitals, and two hotels have been listed in the defaulters’ list. Ironically, individuals having multiple properties in posh localities were among the people found dragging their feet in paying the property tax that range between Rs 18 lakh to Rs 90,000. "Property tax is one among the chief sources of revenue and we need to recover property tax amounting to Rs 44 crore. Corporation has been severing 40-50 drinking water connections per day to make defaulters pay their tax dues," Corporation Commissioner N Ravichandran said. While civic bodies in other parts of the state have been placing dust bins in front of the properties owned by major defaulters, Trichy Corporation said that they do not have such plans to shame defaulters in full public view.
