Tiruchi flyers can say ‘Goodbye Chennai’

Tiruchi is now connected to the country’s financial and political capital cities with Jet Airways launching its flight service to these destinations from here on Sunday.

The introduction of a daily flight service to Mumbai has gladdened the travel and trade industry in Tiruchi which has been seeking a direct service to the city for long.

The launch of a service in the Tiruchi - Mumbai - New Delhi - Mumbai - Tiruchi sector will augment movement of domestic passengers from Tiruchi which until now had direct flight connectivity only to Chennai operated by Jet Airways.

The airline will operate a Boeing 737-800 series aircraft from Tiruchi to Mumbai, and depart for New Delhi after a stopover for over an hour.

This flight, however, would not be flying to Delhi from Mumbai on Saturdays and Sundays.

Airline sources said the flight would arrive at Tiruchi at 2.10 p.m. from Mumbai. It would depart at 2.40 p.m. and reach Mumbai at 4.50 p.m. The same flight would leave for New Delhi from Mumbai at 6 p.m. and arrive at the nation's capital at 8.20 p.m.

The maiden flight from Mumbai received a water salute upon arrival at the Tiruchi international airport in the afternoon.

Airline sources said the first flight from Mumbai to Tiruchi had 145 passengers on board. It took off with 123 passengers to Mumbai from Tiruchi.

A function was organised at the Tiruchi airport in this connection in which State Ministers Vellamandi N. Natarajan, S. Valarmathi, Tiruchi airport director K. Gunasekaran, Tiruchi MP P. Kumar, Collector K. Rajamani, Jet Airways head (domestic sales) V. Raja and those from the travel and trade industry took part.

The introduction of direct flight service to Mumbai is yet another milestone for Tiruchi as this would increase movement of domestic passengers and overall passenger traffic, said Mr. Gunasekaran.

Tiruchi is a unique non-metro international airport in the Southern region with more overseas flight movements to select destinations in South, South-East and West Asia than domestic services. Airlines sources are positive that passenger movement to Mumbai would pick up steadily.

The launch will augur well for the travel and trade industry, said S.A. Mubashir, joint secretary, Tiruchi Travel Federation.
