Six new colleges brought under BDU affiliation

The number of institutions affiliated to the university has risen to 146
Bharathidasan University granted affiliation to six new colleges — three in Nagapattinam district and one each in Tiruchi, Perambalur and Thiruvarur districts — during this academic year.

The institutions in Nagapattinam district comprise Dr. M. Sivakannu Womens Arts and Science College at Ayakkaranpulam in Vedaranyam taluk, St. Theresa's Arts and Science College for Women at Sathangudi in Tranquebar taluk, and Ponmana Semmal Puratchi Thalaivar M.G.R. Government Arts and Science College at Sirgazhi.

Of the remaining three, Sri Meenakshi Vidiyal College of Arts and Science is at Valanadu Kaikatty in Marungapuri taluk of Tiruchi district, Annai Ayesha Arts and Science College for Women at Valikandapuram in Perabalur district, and Dr. Puratchi Thalaivar M.G.R. Government Arts and Science College at Kudavasal in Thiruvarur district.

With the addition of the six institutions, the number of colleges affiliated to the university has risen to 146. They include 10 constituent/model colleges, 22 autonomous colleges, 13 approved institutions and one uni-faculty institution.

Distance education

Student enrolment for distance education programmes witnessed a significant rise during the year as the university roped in nine institutions across the State to offer UG, PG, MCA and MBA programmes through its Centre for Distance Education (CDE).

According to the university's documentation, 8,100 students were admitted to various programmes during 2017-18, taking the total enrolment strength of CDE to 22,426.

Three of the nine institutions with which the university signed MoU for offering the four programmes are in Villupuram district: Krishnaveni Ammal Educational and Rural Development Trust at Koliyanur; Bharathidasan Educational and Social Development Trust at Ulundurpet, and Dheivanai Educational and Rural Development Trust at Vilupuram.

The six other institutions are R.G. Modern Educational Trust, Kanchipuram; Sri Apollo Education Trust, Tindivanam, Sri Nandhanam Educational and Social Welfare Trust at Tirupattur in Vellore district; Social, Economics and Educational Trust, Madurai; T.V.M. College of Education at Podaturper in Thiruvallur district; and Srinivasa Educational Trust at Panruti in Cuddalore district.
