THE Thuvakudi-Karur semi-ring project, by which vehicles can reach Karur without entering Tiruchy, is expected to be completed in the next six months. The project passing through four National Highways -- NH-210, NH -45, NH - 45B and NH -67, will also reduce the travel time considerably Currently, a vehicle takes about 1.5 hours to travel from Thuvakudi to Karur Road. "During office hours, the duration will be more to reach Karur due to heavy traffic in the city. Once the semi-ring road project is completed, vehicles from Thuvakudi can reach Karur in 45 minutes," said R Deepan, an OLA taxi driver.

As per the plan, the semi-ring road, starting from Thuvakudi, will reach Mathur by NH-210 at Pudukkottai. From Pudukottai, the road will go on to Panjapur at NH-45 B. From there, the Bemi-ring road will hit Dindigul at NH-45. The road will finally reach NH -67 at Karur Road. The semi-ring road will also be beneficial for those in the southern districts of the State to reach the northern districts, without entering the city. Similarly, the pilgrims heading to Velankanni can also avoid entering the city if they use the semi-ring road. The project was delayed due to land acquisition issues and objection from local farmers. "In 2010, the farmers filed a petition with the Madurai Bench of Madras High Court stating that the project will affect water supply tanks in Kallikudi and Ptmganur. The project is then being implemented considering their suggestions," said NHAT sources.

Passing via several NHs As per the plan, the semi-ring road, starting from Thuvakudi, will reach Mathur by NH-210 at Pudukkottal. From Pudukottal, the road will goon to Panjapur at NH-45 B. From there, the seml-ring road will hit Dindigul at NH-45. The road will finally reach NH - 67 at Karur Road.
