In all probability, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will be taking part in the last of the five Defence Indigenisation Expos at Tiruchi on April 16.

The Minister has consented to take part in the event in Tiruchi to be hosted by the Ordnance Factories, Ashok Sundaresan, President of BHEL Small Industries' Association, said.

The indigenisation expos in Chennai, Coimbatore, Salem, Hosur and Tiruchi were envisaged as a precursor to the implementation of the defence corridor project, aimed at encouraging and facilitating participation of private industries, especially MSMEs, in defence manufacturing.

Hundreds of BHELSIA units that have faced setback in recent years after shrinkage in orders from BHEL are keenly looking forward to orienting their infrastructure for production of components required for defence industries. The capabilities of the industrial units have to be tweaked. BHELSIA will explore scope for establishing common facility centres with support under Make In India scheme, Mr. Ashok Sundaresan said.

The expo will serve the purpose of providing the vendors an overview of the existing defence procurement policy, indigenisation and outsourcing procedures of Defence Public Sector Units/Ordnance Factory Board, and update them on the recent Government policy initiatives to promote indigenisation and outsourcing and the opportunities thereon. Requirements of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Indian Navy and Air force will be conveyed to the participants during the expo.

A Defence Investor Cell is being set up by Department of Defence Production, which will facilitate the investment in defence production sector. The Defence Investor Cell will directly interact with all interested investors.
