Bharathidasan varsity touts ICED as role model

The institute won several awards for creating a record with its skill training scheme
Bharathidasan University is positioning its Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development (IECD), which created a record through SUITS (School-University-Industry-Tie-up Scheme), as a model for other varsities for carrying out skill development activities.

Functioning out of the Khajamalai Campus, the IECD imparted training and issued certification in 27 skills during 2017-18, benefitting 1,535 students, youth and home makers.

The largest participation of 363 persons was seen in the certificate programme in ERP.9 programme, followed by 114 for desk top publishing, 98 for bridal makeup and mehendi, 83 for spoken English and personality development, 75 for computer hardware and networking, and 72 for office automation with tally.

“Though similar entities exist in other universities for skill development, the extent of reach of IECD was much higher,” Vice-Chancellor P. Manisankar said.

The BDU will offer its expertise to other universities for expanding their ambit of reach, he added.

82,812 students enrolled

For having enrolled 82,812 students from 286 schools in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry through IECD under SUITS for Basic, Office Automation, Programming Techniques, C Programming, C++ Programming, Graphic Design, Web Design and 2D Animation during 2016-17, the university was honoured with awards by Elite World Records from London and Unique World Records from Dubai and India (most number of students enrolled in the skill development programme conducted by a university), Asian Records Academy, Singapore (highest number of school students enrolled in skill development course conducted by a university for one specific intake), Indian Records Academy, Mumbai (the greatest number of school students enrolled in skill development course of an institution in an academic year), and Tamilan Book of Records, Chennai (maximum number of school children enrolled in Computer Science Skill Development Courses conducted by a university).

These organisations conferred Chief Mentor award to the former Vice-Chancellor, V.M. Muthukumar, and Master Mind award to the then Director of IECD, K. Parthasarathy, who had seen through the growth of the institution from the scratch.

During 2017-2018, the enrolment under SUITS progamme conducted in affiliated colleges and tie-up organisations, besides the IECD Campus, soared to 1,01,219.
