Public park to get makeover

Encouraged by the increasing patronage for green spaces, Tiruchi City Corporation (TCC) has decided to refurbish an existing one near St. John’s Vestry School at Cantonment here.

Although one of the oldest parks in the city, it did not have many facilities either for walkers or children. The response was also not up to the mark. It had been maintained by a leading hospital for some time.

Now, the Corporation, which took over the maintenance of the park recently, has started rejuvenation work at a cost of ₹45 lakh. Establishment of a mini amphitheater, open gym and provision of footpath are among the plan.

Corporation Commissioner cum Special Officer, N. Ravichandran told The Hindu that the park had been designed to woo women, children and elders. A footpath would be laid around the park to support morning and evening walkers. It would have sufficient benches for park goers to sit and relax. Besides, the park would be provided with open gym equipment.

It had been decided to provide leg thigh exerciser, push and pull chair, elliptical exerciser, single pole rowing, chest press, Tai Chi wheel, big wheel, AB trainer, twister, pull up bar, parallel up bar, Roman rings and fitness equipment. Landscaping would also be done to add beauty to it.

“We have observed that public patronage is good for parks, which are green in nature. The park will have all features of a green landscape,” he said.

Also, a mini amphitheater would be set up at the park with a seating capacity of 75 persons. It would enable small groups to conduct cultural programmes, entertainment shows and sports events. There would be facility to provide cool water to the users. It would be thrown open to public within 10 days.
