Aimed at encouraging sanitary workers actively involved in waste collection, thus helping to maintain the efficacy of solid waste management (SWM) practices in the city, Trichy corporation handed over a cash award of Rs 2,000 each to six corporation workers for meritorious service on Thursday. The recognition from the civic body is in line with the revised Swachh Survekshan (pan-Indian cleanliness survey) components which also allot marks for rewards given by the urban local body (ULB) to hardworking corporation workers.

Even as all the sanitary workers and heavy vehicle drivers with the civic body are involved in door-to-door waste collection, a special award under Swachh Bharat Mission was instituted by the corporation for the first time this year to acknowledge the extended service of corporation workers in keeping the city clean. Based on the attendance of sanitary workers and also the cleanliness achieved in their respective jurisdiction, the civic body identified six employees including four sanitary supervisors, namely D Sakthivel, E Seenu, A Sakthivel and P Anbalagan, for impeccable attendance record.

Similarly, two drivers, V Velmurugan and U Arumugam, of the corporation's heavy vehicles involved in waste collection, were recognised by the ULB with the special award for timely collection and handling of domestic waste. "I did not take any additional leave other than the declared public holidays. Even during the festival holidays such as Diwali, I opted to work in my ward as residents telephoned me intimating the scattered domestic waste on roads," D Sakthivel, sanitary supervisor with Srirangam zone, told TOI. Corporation sources said that the awardees were selected based on field inspection by senior corporation officials and also considering their attendance record in all four zones of civic body.

The other awardees were also found to be flexible by making themselves available round-the-clock even on their weekly off-days as the visit of VIPs and VVIPs demanded their presence in cleaning the arterial roads of the city. The six corporation employees were given the cash award by corporation commissioner N Ravichandran as a token of appreciation for their efforts to keep the city clean.
