Tiruchy civic body takes steps to reclaim top slot in rankings

TIRUCHY Corporation is yet to make a social media presence to connect with the residents in the city in its efforts to reclaim the lost top-three rank in the list of cleanest cities in the country. Social media is an area which Tiruchy Municipal Corporation missed out, com-pared to other urban local bodies, in the race among the cleanest cities, conducted by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Af-fairs through the Swachh Survekshan survey. The Corporation has not initiated official accounts on Facebook and Twitter. It lacks multi-media elements to connect us-ers to existing platforms like the Corporation's website. "So far, we don't have a dedicated team for managing social me-dia. But, we will hopefully catch up," said N Ravichandran, Commissioner, Tiruchy Corporation. Social media is an area where few other urban local bodies nationwide had given primary attention to in the past two years. Municipal Corporations such as Indore, Bhopal, Visakhapatnam and Surat are currently using their Facebook pages and Twitter handles to communicate better with the public.



 In particular, Surat Mu-nicipal Corporation has been using three Twitter accounts to communicate such as as @OurSMC (Municipal Corporation's account), @Suratsmartcity (An account for Smart Cities Initiative) and @Com-missionerSMC (Corporation Commissioner's account). The residents in such cities were found to be able to connect with their respective civic bodies through the posts that have yielded rewards.

 Eventually, the four urban local bodies man-aged to topple cities like Mysore, Chandi-garh and Tiruchy from the top four spots in the 2017 ranklist of cleanest cities. Another area where Tiruchy Corporation is yet to improve on is the mobile application platforms. The Corporation re-lies heavily on `Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' app, adopted by Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation and 'Swachhata' app adopted by Ministry of Housing and Ur-ban Affairs. The Corporation officials claim, "Swachhata-MoHUA app has been downloaded at least 25,530 times by the users within Tiruchy and there has been at least 13,401 number of grievances regitered.

Among those complaints, 13,345 grievances have been redressed. However, the Corporation is yet to initiate its own mobile app for the purpose of registering other grievances related to health, envionment, urban development, bus stations, stray animal control and drinking water issues. There are other social media platforms like community Facebook pages and Twitter handles which are reportedly sharing, unofficially, the responsibility of conveying the citizen's grievances and being a bridge between citizens and the civic body. The Corporation officials have prom-ised improvement in the areas it has missed out on in the upcoming days.
