NEET coaching delayed in Trichy, 5 other districts
The school education department had announced free NEET coaching in 412 centres across the state through virtual classrooms. Classes were started in 25 centres after Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami inaugurated NEET coaching a couple of weeks ago.
While classed were started at least in one centre across 25 districts, the free coaching is yet to kick start in 6 districts including Trichy.
A circular from Tamil Nadu School Education Joint Director Proceedings dated November 16 said that the classes would be conducted in all the districts except for Nilagiri, Nagercoil, Karur, Madurai, Nagapattinam, Sivagangai and Trichy.
Technical issues in conducting virtual classes have been cited a reason. Overwhelming registration has also been a reason for the delay, say sources from the school education department.
Taking responsibility for training students from the government school for competitive examinations, NEET coaching was announced by the state government a few months ago.
The school education minister has said that medical aspirants would be given free coaching for NEET across 412 centres in the state. Aspiring medical professionals from the government schools were asked to enroll for the online classes that were planned during weekends.
While a consultancy has been hired by the government for training students, online classes would be conducted in Trichy that could be attended by students across the state in various centres through virtual classrooms.
The classes are being framed in an interactive manner where students can also ask for the doubts from various centres.
However, schools are facing issues in accommodating an overwhelming number of students who have expressed willingness to attend coaching at one centre.
For instance, in Trichy, there are 16 centres that will have NEET coaching centers. While government Syed Murtaza higher secondary school is the only urban centre in the city to have NEET coaching, over 1500 students have applied for NEET coaching.
"The virtual classroom in the school can only accommodate a maximum of 50 students but the registration has crossed 1500 students," said a source from the CEO office.
Earlier the government planned to coach only government school students but later on government-aided school children too were allowed to apply. While there are only three government schools in the city, there are several aided schools in the city which is the reason for registration of over 1500 students.
While only one urban centre is allocated for Trichy city, it could not accommodate such a big number of students, said the source.
Trichy chief educational officer M Ramakrishnan, however, said that the technical issues would be sorted out soon and assured that classes would be started within few days.
While the classes would be conducted only during weekends from morning 9 am to 5 pm, eight teachers will be assisting students in these classes in every center.
