National Library Week begins



Coins and currencies of various countries were displayed at the District Central Library on Tuesday to mark the start of the 50th National Library Week celebration.

The exhibition, organised by the Numismatics and Philatelists’ Association, Tiruchi, drew nearly 600 visitors on the first day.

Presented by a team led by Association president Vijayakumar, the display featured coins and currencies in vogue during the Sangam era and under the Chera, Chola, Pandiya, Madurai Sultan, Vijayanagaram, and Nayak rule.

Coins and currencies of Portugal, Britain, Argentina, Afganisthan, Belgium, Bangladesh, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Japan were among those showcased at the exhibition, District Library Officer A.P. Sivakumar said.

A free medical camp conducted by a team from Thulasi Pharmacies benefitted 200 visitors.

The exhibition and the medical camp were inaugurated by the president of Readers Circle, Tiruchi, V. Govindasamy.

As part of the week-long celebrations, there will be a free eye camp sponsored by Agarwal Eye Hospital.

There will be a discussion for senior citizens on the topic ‘Padithathil Pidithathu’ on Wednesday.
