Monsoon plays truant: only mild showers in Tiruchi

Various parts of Tiruchi and Ariyalur districts experienced mild showers on Saturday.

Most parts of Tiruchi town and neighbouring areas witnessed intermittent drizzle particularly in the morning. The sky remained overcast throughout the day. However, it did not bring much rain, causing disappointment to farmers and officials.

The maximum rainfall was recorded at Devimangalam with 11 mm during the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 a.m. on Saturday. Marungapuri, Navalur Kuttapattu and Kallakudi received 10 mm each.

Kovilpatti, Lalgudi, Manapparai, Pullambadi, Nandhiyar Head and Samayapuram recorded 6 mm to 9 mm during the same period.

While Tiruchi town recorded 5 mm, Tiruchi airport received just 1.5 mm. Musiri, Thathaiyengarpettai, Vathalai, which are known for paddy and banana cultivation, recorded nil rainfall.

“North-east monsoon rain is still elusive as far as Tiruchi district is concerned. There has not been substantial rainfall so far since the onset of the monsoon,” a senior official of Agricultural department said.
