Library is a platform to develop skills

The Director of Public Libraries S. Kannappan on Friday exhorted students to spend time reading in libraries.

Inaugurating a pattimandram at St. Annes Girls’s Higher Secondary School as part of the 50th National Library Week celebrations organised by the District Central Library, Mr. Kannappan said libraries were turning out to be the platforms for fostering several skills.

‘Boost performance’

Discouraging rote learning, Mr. Kannappan said it would lead to students failing miserably in competitive exams. Reading books in libraries would stand the students in good stead to perform well in academics.

The pattimandram was on whether knowledge accrued from books or from qualifications. The team espousing book reading as primary source of knowledge enhancement was adjudged winners.

The speakers comprised students from Srimad Andavan College of Arts and Science, Indira Ganesan College of Arts and Science and Syed Murtuza Government Boys Higher Secondary School.

Earlier, a cheque for ₹30,000 towards enrolment of 1,000 students as members of libraries was handed over to Mr. Kannappan by Chittibabu, an industrialist.

Thulasi Balasubramaniam and Pattabiraman donated rare books in the presence of District Library Officer A.P. Sivakumar.
