Greening project launched

Members of Ex-servicemen Samaj of BHEL, Tiruchi, displayed their concern for environment recently by undertaking a mass seedball planting around the factory premises.

The Samaj has so far planted 2,500 seedballs on the sides of the road from Ganesha Roundabout to Unit II of BHEL Tiruchi, and has offered its greening service to the Highways Department to extend the planting from Thuvakudi Toll Plaza to Thanjavur in phases.

Around 100 members of the Samaj planted the saplings supplied by Shine Treechy, an NGO involved in clean and green environment initatives.

The project was inaugurated by R. Raja Manohar, Executive Director, BHEL, Tiruchi Complex.

‘Reflects zeal’

The project reflects the zeal of the ex-servicemen to save the environment with a sense of commitment similar to defending the nation, K.N. Ganapathy Subramaniam, Samaj president, said.

The planted seedballs of neem, pungai and tamarind are expected to sprout in the coming days and gain roots over the next few weeks, another senior functionary of the Samaj said.
