In order to cater to people from Trichy working in Asia Pacific countries, the postal department inaugurated an exclusive counter for posting international parcels or mails at the Trichy Head Post Office on Tuesday. With this facility, articles can be sent to over 100 countries at a nominal tariff, officials said.
After inaugurating the counter, M Sampath, chief postmaster general, Tamil Nadu circle, Chennai, requested the general public to utilize the facility and said, "The public can use the international parcel packaging centre to pack their parcels and to mail any article, since the tariff is very nominal."
Speaking to reporters, Sampath said that similar facility was launched at T Nagar head post office in Chennai on October 13, and it has realized Rs 6 lakh so far. It has also proposed to open three more booking centres at Adayar and Thiruvanmiyur in Chennai, besides two in Salem and Madurai shortly, he added.
According to a senior official, the international parcel which weighs up to 2 kg can be booked at any post office and these packets would be processed separately. The tariff for the service varies between Rs 310 to Rs 330 for the first 100 grams and Rs 25 to Rs 45 for additional 100 gms or part depending on the Asia-Pacific country to which the packet is being sent to. Contractual customers are eligible for discounts based on the volume of business, he added.
