About 25 parks in the city have been made self-sufficient to produce compost to maintain green cover on their premises. The initiative is aimed at recycling the waste generated at the park in the form of dry leaves and wood which are otherwise taken to the dumping facility.

Moreover, the civic body is also aiming to score in the cleanliness survey where 28 marks has been allocated for onsite composting. Trichy is among the 4,000 odd cities and towns across the country which would be assessed on various parameters for cleanliness ranking.
A composting unit has been constructed on a portion of the park where all the bio waste is collected for further processing.
"It would take at least 45 days for producing compost and the same would be used to nurture the green cover in the parks," said corporation commissioner N Ravichandran. There are 25 such parks in the city that are being equipped with onsite composting units, he added.
Saying that proper care has been given to ensure that the units doesn't disturb the park ambiance, he added that the officials from other civic bodies have visited the facilities in the city and have planned to replicate it in their cities.
