BHEL staff, families clean canal embankment



BHEL employees and their family members joined scores of volunteers in cleaning up the eastern bank of Uyyakondan Canal near Tiruverumbur under Swachh Bharat Mission on Wednesday.

They removed the overgrowth of vegetation and garbage, particularly poly bags, to a stretch of two km. Four earth movers and a number of trucks were put to use during the cleaning operation that also included creating door-to-door awareness among residents in the surroundings through distribution of pamphlets.

In all, there were over 250 persons including employees of BHEL-Tiruchirappalli, their family members, NCC cadets from Human Resource Development Centre of BHEL Tiruchi, volunteers from Agni Siragugal, a social service team, BHEL Shines, an NGO, members of local resident welfare associations of Bhelpur, Jainagar, Thiruvengadanagar and Ganesapuram, sanitation workers from Koothaipar and Krishnasamuthiram and people from nearby villages.

M. Jayakumaran, General Manager, Human Resources and Civil, BHEL Tiruchi, inaugurated the cleaning activity in the presence of Thirumaran, Assistant Executive Engineer, River Conservation Division, PWD, and Narayanamoorthy, Executive Officer, Koothaipar Town Panchayat and Krishnasamuthiram panchayat.

Mr. Jayakumaran said segregation of garbage into degradable and biodegradable wastes was advocated among the people.

The cleaning activity was the third such major activity undertaken by employees of BHEL Tiruchi. They had undertaken cleaning activities on the western bank of Uyyakondan Canal and temple tank bund and surrounding streets of Malaikoil and Thiruverumbur last year.
