PWD demolishes abandoned building on Trichy-Karur NH

Related imageLong standing demand of villagers in and around Jeeyapuram was fulfilled on Tuesday when the Public Works Department (PWD) after a lengthy hiatus demolished an abandoned building that acted as a blind spot for the commuters riding past Mekkudi panchayat in Trichy-Karur stretch of National Highway 67. The presence of the building has so far caused several casualties including four deaths this year.
Locals of a dozen villages situated about 8-9km from the city including Mekkudi, Andanallur, and Allur have been using the 12km long Andanallur-Kudamurutti bridge on NH67 to reach Trichy, said the villagers. While travelling at this stretch, an abandoned building of PWD quarters, situated right before Thiruchendurai at a steep curve, had been hindering the view of motorists approaching the highway from Trichy which resulted in frequent accidents. Residents of Allur and other hamlets in Srirangam taluk had been pushing the district administration to remove the building. Sources said that district collector K Rajamani recently ordered the PWD river conservancy division to knock down the PWD guest house.
P Aiyarappan, representative of Legal Awareness and Anti-Corruption Organisation (LAACO) in Allur said, "It was a major relief for our year-long struggle. Besides the locals commuting on a daily basis, large number of visitors would also come to Mukkombu, a tourist attraction along Cauvery banks which is just 6 km away from the curve." Following the instructions from district collector, PWD officialson Tuesday demolished thebuilding. "We also checked for similar abandoned buildings along the stretch but no other structure was found," he added.
