Park at your own peril in Tiruchy rly junction

THE passengers who arrive at the Tiruchy Railway Junction are left in a lurch as they are un-able to find a proper parking space in the premises. The multi-level parking at the station premises has stopped accommodating new vehicles, as the con-tract is said to have lapsed. The railway officials claim that the process to award a fresh tender is on and will be through in a week. The newly renovated parking lot will also be thrown open for the public soon. The area, where the Railway Junction station and the Central Bus Stand are located, seem crowded and people are not able to find a place to park anywhere nearby. Considering a footfall of about 30000 passengers at the station per day, the count vehicles are also estimated to be running into thousands. The con-tract period of the existing multi-level parking and the regular parking have lapsed recently and the vehicle owners have been told that parking in the area is solely on their own risk. Commuters are found looking fora safe place to park their two wheelers also. Some passengers are seen going back to the Central Bus Stand to stop their vehicle at the multi-level parking there. With 'no parking' sign boards all over, the vehicle users are a troubled lot, especially when they are in a rush to catch the next train.

A motorist who was in a hurry to board Chemmozhi Express to reach Coimbatore was seen checking to park his bike, when there were just a few minutes left for him to board the train. "The situation has become worse and need to be addressed soon," said M Gokulakrishnan, a passenger.

Another passenger complained that she paid !70 to the person-in-charge at the multi-level parking for parking her vehicle for less than 24 hours, during last month. Such fleecing practices have been observed for some time by the contractors. When the Tiruchy Railway officials call for fresh tenders, they should make sure that such things never happen, she added. A higher official with the Tiruchy Junction said that a parking lot is being planned near the multi-level parking area, by raising and filling the ground level, which will be done soon.
