Not restricting themselves with mere awareness campaigns against the usage of plastic, a city-based voluntary organisation has mooted a campaign to abolish the usage of plastics bags at the Uzhavar Santhai (farmers' market).Equipped with cloth bags, members of Thaneer - a city based voluntary organisation - replaced plastic bags from customers who had brought it along while coming for shopping. Thaneer has been running campaign against plastics for several years now in Trichy."Apart from spearheading door-to-door campaigns, we have been sensitising people on its ill-effects. However there is very little change that can be witnessed in reality," said K C Neelamegam, secretary of Thaneer."Vegetables markets are the places that witness circulation of more plastic bags , As Reported By TOI.

According to the Newspaper,Thus we thought it would be more appropriate to sensitise people coming to the market," he said."Not that we are unaware of the ill effect of plastics but because of its wide circulation and convenience, many including me can not avoid it," said H Sadakatullah, a regular at Thennur farmers' market, while advocating a strict ban on its circulation in the market."Though plastics carry bags below 40 microns is banned, apart from poor enforcement, the fact that it enjoys patronage, it can not be abolished," said M Sekaran, president of Thaneer."Demand would be raised with the district collector to make farmers' market free from plastic bags," said Sekaran, adding that vegetable markets attribute a lot to the usage of plastics.While plastic carry bags are convenient to use, we asked them to find an alternative in cotton bags that are eco-friendly, he said.
