Students of National Institute of Technology - Tiruchi (NITT) aptly termed DaanUtsav, the joy of giving week they celebrated earlier this month, HumaNITTy.

The philanthropic contributions of students, staff and alumni of NITT for the celebration for the sixth year in row were the basis of as many of 23 outreach events resulting in benefits for rural schools, old age homes and special schools.

For the students, HumaNITTy also means coming together of all the social clubs in the institution, bound by the lofty thought that the act of giving is an education in itself.

The HumaNITTy Week celebrated from October 2 to 8 was preceded by an awareness creation through a rather novel approach. The students performed flash mob dance at FSM malls, LA cinemas and Tiruchi Railway Junction in the preceding weeks.

An interesting event: Sandwich Seva was also conducted at the Junction wherein students laboured to make sandwiches to feed the poor and needy in and around the junction.

The student groups spread out to augment collections in libraries in neighbouring village schools and night study centres at Ayyampatti and Keelanbil, providing borewells and pumps to the government school at Keelambil, gifting books and steel almirahs for the Government High School at Achampatti, and providing fans and tube lights for classrooms in Thuvakudy Higher Secondary School, strengthening lab apparatus at Mukkulathor Higher Secondary School, and supplying sports equipment at Killukottai Govt Higher Secondary School.

The valedictory session was marked by distribution of prizes to the student teams and the unsung heroes of the society for their outstanding services to the community by Collector K. Rajamani, and the Chairman of CII Tiruchi and General Manager, BHEL, P. Raguraman.

NITT Director Mini Shaji Thomas presided over the function.
