Cut-off dates for crop insurance announced

The district administration has announced the cut-off date for farmers to enrol themselves under the crop insurance scheme in Trichy district. According to the agriculture department, a total of 345 revenue villages have been notified for insuring their crops under the scheme. Authorities have asked the farmers to come forward to register under crop insurance scheme before the last date.
Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) scheme implemented for 2016-17 compensates farmers who suffered crop failure due to natural disasters. It also encourages farmers to adopt new technologies, thereby increasing their returns.

The district level monitoring committee meeting of PMFBY was chaired by district collector K Rajamani to fix the cut-off dates for insuring rabi crops under PMFBY scheme. Thereby, the cut-off date for insuring samba paddy crop is November 30, 2017 and the cut-off date for being eligible for making claims under the category 'Prevented Sowing' is October 20, 2017. The cut-off date for rabi maize is October 30, 2017, officials from agriculture department said.
This year, crop insurance can be done in 345 notified revenue villages for all notified crops at firka level or revenue village level in Trichy district. All farmers who have availed loans will be covered under this scheme compulsorily.
Other farmers who wish to enrol under PMFBY scheme can contact the agents of the implementing agency (agricultural insurance company of India) or common service centres or primary agricultural cooperative credit society or any nationalised banks with the registration form, adangal, photocopy of bank passbook, Aaadhar card and insurance premium. The premium to be paid for samba paddy is Rs 403 per acre.
The district collector urged the insurance agency to open more block-level facilitation centres to help the farmers.
