Intensifying its measures to control the spread of dengue, the Tiruchi Corporation has launched a house-to-house drive to clear mosquito breeding sources and has also began imposing fines on residents if larvae of aedes aegypti, the dengue causing mosquito, are found.

A resident of Poosari Street in ward 8 of the city, Palaniappan, was slapped with a fine of Rs. 5,000 after civic workers led by City Health Officer R. Chithra found the mosquito larvae in large numbers in a water tank. The water supply to the house was also disconnected, Corporation officials said.

Corporation Special Officer-cum-Commissioner N. Ravichandran pointed out that the civic body has already requested city residents to clean their drinking water sumps and overhead tanks using disinfectants once every week.

The Corporation would initiate stern action against residents if larvae were found in their houses and also recover the cost of cleaning the same.

Mr. Ravichandran said, an intensive door-to-door drive was conducted in wards 5 and 8 in Srirangam zone to clear mosquito breeding sources. As many as 7850 houses were covered during the drive when discarded containers, tyres and plastic bags were removed by Corporation workers.
