Cauvery water released into Pullambadi, New Kattalai canals

Ariyalur: Cauvery water for irrigation purpose was released from the Vathalai regulator in Trichy district into the New Kattalai high-level and Pullambadi canals on Wednesday to benefit at least 22,114 acres of canal-based farm lands in Ariyalur district.As ordered by the chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami, Cauvery water being discharged from Mettur dam was released into the two canals to benefit paddy fields and other cash crops in the district. The water was released with floral tributes by the government's chief whip Thamarai S Rajendran and Ariyalur district collector K Laxmi Priya.Deviating from the left banks of Cauvery near Vathalai, Pullambadi canal would flow for 90km through Trichy and Ariyalur districts, directly benefiting at least 8,831 acres and indirectly benefiting (through lakes and ponds) around 13,283 acres in Ariyalur district. The regulator for the two canals at Vathalai is to be kept open for irrigation purpose till January 28, 2018.Farmers said the move, though delayed would be considered as a shot in the arm for those willing to take up samba paddy cultivation.Citing that several stretches of the canals were not properly desilted, Ariyalur farmers sought officials of the public works department to ensure proper flow of Cauvery water to the tail-end fields of Ariyalur.
