Discounts and offers came to the aid of last-minute shoppers for this Diwali. While those who could afford had already finished purchases much ahead of the festival, it was now or never offers for the underprivileged section.
Commercial streets in the city were abuzz with footfall of anxious people hailing from adjacent districts, with their just received Diwali bonus to purchase clothes and sweets for their family.
S Rengaraju, a daily wage labourer with a private industry in Ariyalur, said he had been waiting for his bonus to make his Diwali purchase. "After I received my Diwali bonus on Tuesday morning, we came as a family to grab the best deals. Since Tuesday night will be the last opportunity even for the traders to complete their business, we shop only the night before Diwali."

The traders wooing last-minute shoppers have been offering special deals such as buy one get one free for every single purchase. The prominent trade stretch of the city, NSB Road, traditionally known as Chinna Kadai Veedhi, witnessed a mad rush since Tuesday evening. It was not just the textile shops that did plenty of business, but also the fireworks shops, which have no other go than sell their products on or before Diwali.
"As the sales did not go as much beyond our expectations, we are compromising a portion of our profit so that we would not incur loss. With only a night left for Diwali, we provided 10-15% discount to complete our inventory," S Arumugam, a cracker shop dealer in Cantonment said. As always, parking was a severe let down for the last-minute shoppers since crucial spots like Cantonment, Singarathope, and Mainguard Gate struggled due to the unregulated parking of two-wheelers.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) Trichy division sources said that beside the 40 regular bus services to Chennai, around 200 special buses are being operated to state capital with TNSTC workers showing attendance in full.
"There has been good response for the special bus services,," an official with TNSTC, Trichy added.
