The project will be implemented by tapping financial resources from the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs of the Central government under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT). The scheme will cover as many as 15 wards in the city.

It will be the third phase of UGD project. The Corporation has already brought about 30% of households in the city under the first phase of UGD project.

The second phase of the project, which is to be implemented at a cost of Rs. 350 crore, is awaiting administrative sanction from the government. It will cover about 25 % of households.

N. Ravichandran, Special Officer- cum-Commissioner, Tiruchi Corporation, toldThe Hinduthat an agency had been appointed for preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the third phase of the UGD project.

It would have elaborate information on areas to be covered, length of UGD line, pumping stations, distribution line and mains, sewage treatment plants and others. The preparation of DPR had already reached an advanced level. The private agency was likely to submit the report to the Corporation within a week.

He added that the proposal had already been discussed at various levels with the State and Central governments. The Corporation had received positive response for including the proposal under the AMRUT scheme.

Mr. Ravichandran said the Corporation would review the proposal once it received the DPR. It would make changes if needed. The DPR would then be submitted to the Commissionerate of Municipal Administration of the State government and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for approval.

He said if the third phase was approved it would be a big boost to the Corporation in improving the basic infrastructure of the city.

It had been proposed to fully cover wards such as 31,36, 37,38,39, 40, 64 and 65. Wards such as 35,41,42,45, 53, 60 and 63 would be partially covered. Edamalaipattipudur, K.K.
