Tourism sector needs pool of high quality guides, says Secretary

The tourism industry should groom a pool of high quality professional tourist guides in the State, said Apurva Varma, Principal Secretary, Tourism, here on Thursday.

“It is essential to have a pool of trained multilingual guides,” he said referring to short-comings that came in the way of tourism promotion in the State.

Making a SWOT analysis of the State, in terms of tourism scenario at a World Tourism Day seminar organised by the Department of Tourism and the Tamil Nadu Travel Mart Society here, he said: “Tamil Nadu has everything except snow. We are the only State to have four international airports; we are the only State to have five UNESCO heritage sites. Besides, Tamil Nadu is also a peaceful State.”

However, “we are poor team players. We do not synergise our efforts,” he rued.

Lack of professional guides and marketing and services of international standard were among the shortcomings. There was also a need to improve infrastructure.

But Tamil Nadu, he pointed out, stood first in the country in attracting the maximum number of tourists for three consecutive years from 2014 to 2016.

Earlier, Tourism Minister Vellamandi N.Natarajan inaugurated the seminar in the presence of P.Kumar, MP, and Collector K.Rajamani.
