Poompuhar to deck up Tiruchi Airport

Image result for poompuhar handicrafts coimbatore trichyTamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation has bagged an attractive contract for beautifying the interiors of the Tiruchi Airport's new terminal building with artistry of the local culture.

The contract for Rs. 58 lakh has been approved, and the beautification work with wood carvings, statues, brass items, photographs and other handicraft items personifying local culture would be carried out, Tiruchi Airport Director K. Gunasekaran said.

Space has already been provided to the Tamil Nadu Handicrafts Development Corporation, known better as Poompuhar, for display of handicraft items. The contract envisages enhancing visibility of the handicraft items in other places in the airport as well, particularly the entrance and the VIP rooms, Mr. Gunasekaran said, adding that the task is slated for completion within 45 days from the time of start.

The Tamilnadu Handicrafts Development Corporation has already completed beautification of the interiors of the airports at Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Puducherry and Tirupathi.

The rich heritage of Tamilian handicraft reflecting traditions, religious characteristics and cultural flavours are being highlighted to the several thousands of air passengers through these airports. In doing so, the Poompuhar seeks to ensure that the craftsmen, artisans, sculptors and engravers earn a decent profit on their creations, alongside preserving the ancient traditions of Tamilian art and craft.

The patronage for handicraft items had so far been sought through showrooms and exhibitions.
