Karur bypass road lacks upkeep, vehicles unsafe

A portion of the old Karur bypass road from Andanallur village till Petavaithalai is full of craters and potholes, indicating lack of maintenance for many years now Owing to the bad condition, vehicles pile up and accidents take place. The people around the spot have staged several protests in the past seeking the government to repair or relay the road, but no action was taken till date. The stretch is 13-km long and at least 15 accidents take place every month. M Vinoth Mani of Andanallur village in Tiruchy said, The road from our village till Pettavaithalai is part of the Karur bypass road, which is being maintained by the highways department.

Owing to poor maintenance, the condition is such. The road has two lanes and there are no medians, causing head-on collision. Vehicular traffic flow is heavy and frequent traffic bottle-necks occur, making it difficult for commuters, including school children, to reach their destinations in time." He said construction of a new bridge in the place of the Kudamurutti old bridge could ease the traffic and medians should be place to prevent mishaps. Also, service lanes have to be built The 13-km stretch has to be relaid or re-paired. He alleged that though the national highway built multi-lanes near Thirupparaithurai, a private concern has been collecting toll, which should be stopped and action tak-en for illegal toll collection. These demands were put forth by residents around the area and representatives of political par-ties to the district Collector seeking the district administration to address the issues.
