Friday Market to be revived in Tiruchi

Fresh vegetables to be brought daily for the market

The Department of Cooperation has decided to revive the Friday Market on the premises of Chinthamani Supermarket at Puthur here.

Though it has a vegetable section and sells vegetables to its customers daily, the supermarket had organised Friday market in the evenings. It had a list of dedicated customers since fresh vegetables sourced from nearby areas were made available with competitive prices. Customers from Puthur, Cantonment, Kumaran Nagar, Thillai Nagar and Ramalingam Nagar used the opportunity to buy vegetables for a week.

But it is no longer enjoying the support of customers. On an average, it was transacting business to the tune of ₹1.5 lakh. It handled two to three tonnes of vegetables. The business has plummeted to just ₹10,000 to ₹12,000.

Agreeing that there were some “administrative issues” in organising the market, Joint Registrar of Cooperatives, K.C. Ravichandran told The Hindu on Tuesday that he had studied the issue. Steps would be taken to sort out them. A facelift would be given soon.

Similar to the farm fresh outlets, he said fresh vegetables would be brought daily for the market. Organic vegetables, fruits and organic cooking oil would be sourced from Manapparai, Marungapuri, Thuvarankurichi, Thuraiyur and Tiruchi-Dindigul border villages
