Forest dept awaits Rs 7 cr to finish zoological park

WITH construction of a zoo at R Palayam on in full swing, dis-trict forest authorities are wating for funds to the tune of Rs 7 crore for completion of the project. Currently, Rs 2.5 crore of work has ended with the installation of deer enclosures and trees to make the site green. The zoo is located on Chennai By-pass Road, 32 km away from here. A senior Forest Department official said, "A detailed propos-al was submitted to the State government in April. The entire design is being carried out as per the recommendations of the Central Zoo Authority after carrying out a detailed field study in Mysore and other regions.


 Set up on 75 acres, the park will house 24 enclosures, inciuding some for carnivorous animals and reptiles. Spotted Deer, Barking Deer, Sambhar and Black Buck would be the first to arrive at the zoo. Almost all animals would be brought from various parts of the State with Spotted and other types of deer from the Eastern Ghats. The second phase of the project would allow the zoo to be thrown open to the public. Forest officials hope with entertainment spots sparse in Tiruchy, the zoo would be set to attract the maximum number of people from nearby districts. Demarcation of boundaries, fencing, the entrance arch, pictorial signboards and water facilities through bore wells and an overhead tank with a capacity of 24,000 litres was all part of the first phase of the project.

Besides, four enclosures to accommodate animals have also been created. Senior officials from the State as well as Central governments are constantly monitoring the work. "While work got over a few weeks ago, the next phase would only start after the State government sanctions funds for the second phase," said the senior official. The zoo will have veterinary centres, watchtowers, canteens, parking lots and other facilities to cater to visitors.
