162 CCTV cameras to keep watch over city
THE City police department would get a total of Rs 55 lakhs through Nirbhaya fund in order to increase surveillance in the City. As many as 162 cameras are to to be installed in 100 places and optical fibre lines are to be laid for the purpose in vital parts of the city. According to Commissioner of Po-lice, A Arun, "A total of 100 places have been identified in the city by a team of police officials and installa-tion process will begin soon. " The officials also said that the roads in the city will be dug up to lay optical fibre cables to connect the cameras. The cameras will be connected to two of the control rooms at the two vital locations of the city; Srirangam AC office and the control room in the city at Cantonment. The deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Sakthi Ganesan is in charge of the entire process which is currently underway in full swing.
Considering the rise in traffic along these roads, the police have started erecting poles for the installation of CCTV cameras, which are vital role in solving crimes and other L&O issues in the locality. A senior police official with the city police said, "Two private players are engaged in the process of installing poles. The two agencies were engaged for the work in Chatiram Bus stand and Central bus stand areas." In the city alone, there are a total of 299 cameras with the maximum numbers present in Chathiram Bus Stand. A dedicated control room functions at the Police out post, with high-speed dome cameras and infra red cameras. The proposal to install cameras was mooted a month ago, after which the locations were decided by senior police officials. Traffic along Karur Bye pass road, Kohinoor Signal, have all increased.
