Uzhavar Sandhai will soon get a facelift

The Uzhavar Sandhai (farmers market) at Anna Nagar in Thennur is all set to receive a facelift with construction of concrete structures and a sanitary complex.

This is reportedly the first civil work to be taken up after a long time. The first Uzhavar Sandhai, which was set up on December, 16, 1999, was the first of its kind in Tiruchi district.

There are six other Uzhavar Sandhais in the district including K.K Nagar, Thiruverumbur, Lalgudi and Musiri.

Though almost all of them are well-patronised by local residents, the Anna Nagar Uzhavar Sandhai is said to be the most sought-after one, thanks to its prime location and easy access to city dwellers. With 95 shops and an administrative office, it attracts 3,000 to 4,000 customers a day and handles 35 to 40 tonnes of vegetables and fruits.

However, the absence of a sanitary complex for both the shop owners and customers had been a sore point. Similarly, flower vendors and tender coconut sellers, who have been doing business on mud floor, wanted concrete structures.

Funded by the Tiruchi Agricultural Marketing Committee, the ongoing facelift work is set to address their long-pending demands. Construction of pavement shops, repair and maintenance works and toilets for men and women are among the facelift plan.

The work is in an advanced stage of completeion, sources said.
