Security stepped up ahead of Independence Day

Security and surveillance has been stepped up across the central region encompassing eight districts ahead of the Independence Day celebrations to prevent any untoward incidents.

Teams of police personnel were conducting rounds in the districts carrying out surprise checks at lodges besides conducting vehicle checks. Law enforcers have also enhanced surveillance at vital installations identified in their respective districts and brought key areas under security cover.

Police sources said round-the-clock checks would be conducted across the zone to ensure that untoward incidents did not take place on the eve and on the day of the celebrations.

The function venues where the Independence Day celebrations would be organised by the respective district administration have also been brought under security cover.

All field level officers have been instructed to be on a state of alert and carry out night rounds on the eve of the celebrations in their respective districts.

Police authorities said lodge checks were being carried out across the central region with separate teams constituted to conduct vehicle checks along important main roads and at border check posts.

A senior police officer said necessary security arrangements have been made. Anti-sabotage checks were also conducted at places identified as sensitive, said another officer.

In Tiruchi city alone, 16 vital installations have been identified for mounting surveillance.

Security has also been enhanced at Tiruchi railway junction and at the international airport.

Bomb Detection Squad of the Railway Protection Force conducted anti-sabotage checks at Tiruchi railway junction and on board the Coimbatore – bound Jan Shatabdhi Express upon arrival of the train here on Monday.
