Proximity factor: Changes in police jurisdiction

The territorial jurisdiction of some police stations falling under the Tiruchi Police Commissionerate has been revised on a recent order from the State government.

The revision, directed by the Home Department following a recommendation of the Third Police Commission, has been made keeping in view the proximity factor to enable speedier action in case of any emergency situation. As per the latest change, some areas that were hitherto under a particular police station have been annexed and attached to the nearest one.

The change in territorial areas has been conveyed to the respective jurisdictional officers serving in the city, police sources said. Under the revised scheme of things, Sangiliandapuram, which was hitherto under the jurisdiction of Golden Rock police station, has now been attached to Palakkarai police station.

Likewise, part of Mannarpuram, Tamil Nadu Special Police campus, near the Viralimalai road over bridge, and military ground at Mannarpuram have all been attached to Edamalaipattipudur police station. These areas were earlier under the K.K. Nagar police station limits. Similarly, Pirattiyur and northern side to Dheeran Nagar have been annexed from Edamalaipattipudur police station and attached to Sessions Court police station.

The Viralimalai road junction to drainage canal on the Crawford road has been brought under the jurisdiction of Edamalaipattipudur police station from the Cantonment police station.

The revision of territorial jurisdiction has also been conveyed to the respective Range Officers in the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police. The jurisdictional officers have been asked to make necessary entries in the relevant register pertaining to the revision, said police sources.

Formed in 1997, the Tiruchi City Police Commissionerate headed by a senior police officer in the rank of Inspector General of Police has 14 law and order police stations falling under Srirangam, Golden Rock, Cantonment and Fort Police Ranges.

In addition to this, there are four All Women Police Stations at Fort, Srirangam, Golden Rock and Cantonment. The Commissionerate covers the entire Tiruchi City spreading over an area that exceeds 150 sq.km.

A few years ago, a detailed plan was worked out to bring certain peripheral areas presently under the Tiruchi Rural Police limits within the ambit of the City Police Commissionerate.

A Tiruchi City Expansion Committee constituted in 2012 and comprising the Superintendent of Police, Tiruchi and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) worked out the plan and forwarded it to the State government for approval. However, it is yet to take off.
