NIT to confer honorary PhD on star alumnus Chandrasekaran

Image result for n chandrasekaranCOME Saturday N Chandraseka-ran, an alumnus of National In-stitute of Technology (NIT), Tiruchy who competed his Mas-ter of Computer Applications (MCA) in 1986 and is now Tata Sons Chairman, will be honoured with a doctorate by his alma mater. The decision was passed by Mini Shaji Thomas, Director, NIT and Senate members in a meeting held recently, The decision was passed unanimously. In a press conference, Thomas said Chandrasekaran would receive the doctorate during the 13th convocation ceremony to be held on August 12. She stated awarding the doctorate had been in the works for a while and it was de-cided to accord Chandrasekaran the honour at the convocation. She said, "This year, 1,649 students will be awarded degrees and two students who scored 9.91 per cent in cumulative grade point average (CGPA) will be awarded medals."

This is the highest number of NIT, Tiruchy graduates till date. Over 1,000 students' have been placed in 250 companies across the country, Thomas said, with 97 per cent of under-graduates and 87 per cent of postgraduates selected by fir ms during placements. NIT's Golden Jubilee Community Hall will also be inaugurated at the time of convocation. "Graduates have been told too bring their parents to the convocation as the hall can accom-modate 5,000 people," Thomas said.

A new foundation stone would be laid inside the premises at the time of the event. NIT is one of the few institutes in the country to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with National Academic Depository (NAD), a Union government and University Grants Commission (UGC)-recommended plat-form for institutions to digitally secure online academic awards to students directly to the NAD account For an interactive session with graduates and and students, NIT has decided to bring in Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy along with Chandrasekaran. Speaking about NIT's five-year strategic plan, the Director said that decisions are under process to set an action plan for the next five years, including the filling of vacant posts for teachers in the institute and moving up from the current 11th spot in the National Institute Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings to number one., Mini stated.
