The District Central Library has started implementing its plan for tie-ups with colleges to enable students to prepare for UPSC and other competitive examinations even while pursuing their courses.

Recently, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the District Central Library and Holy Cross College for sharing of resources and expertise.

The library will utilise the expertise of the college faculty and the students will derive the benefit of library's resources. The library was keen to enter into similar tie-ups with other colleges also, District Library Officer A. P. Sivakumar said.

The District Central Library has been subscribing to newspapers and periodicals that are helpful for students to prepare for the competitive examinations. It has a separate section for Competitive Examinations where candidates appearing for the various examinations conducted by UPSC, TNPSC, Railway Recruitment Board, BSRB, Teachers' Recruitment Board, UGC and other entities, derive utility of the vast collection of books in various disciplines.

Alongside having tie-ups with colleges, the District Central Library was also in the process of deriving utility of the National Mission on Libraries. The National Mission on Libraries was established in 2012 by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, in pursuance of National Knowledge Commission recommendations for sustained attention for development of Libraries and Information Science Sector.

The scheme consists of four components: Creation of National Virtual Library of India (NVLI), setting up of NML Model Libraries, Quantitative and Qualitative Survey of Libraries, and Capacity Building. The mission seeks to put in place a world class system that disseminates information, fosters reading habits and facilitates research work.
