Doctor of Letters conferred on Tata Sons Chairman

Emphasising the importance of commitment and courage for achieving success, Infosys founder N.R. Narayana Murthy on Saturday said that Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran, who rose from the bottom of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) through performance and values to sit in the same chair as J.R.D. Tata, stood as a role model to emulate.

Delivering the convocation address at National Institute of Technology-Tiruchi, after Mr. Chandrasekaran was conferred with Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the corporate world, Mr. Murthy said that Mr. Chandrasekaran was a leader in every position he had chosen to accept. He had demonstrated that there was no glass ceiling for those who demonstrated competence, courage, commitment and character. In an apparent reference to Mr. Chandrasekaran’s long association with TCS since 1987 and frequent change of jobs by present generation, Mr. Murthy said that, “I hope somebody will write a book on Mr. Chandrasekaran’s illustrious life so that all of us can refer to it in our hour of moral dilemma and vacillation in decision making. Study his life and follow his precepts in every action of yours,” he said.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Chandrasekaran, who was an alumnus of the then Regional Engineering College (now NIT), Tiruchi, turned nostalgic. “It is this campus that laid the foundation for my successful career. I had extraordinary luck to have lecturers, who enriched my knowledge on science and mathematics and inculcated values. I owe it to NIT-T,” he said.

Going down memory lane to trace the influence of his teachers on his life, Mr. Chandrasekaran recalled how his primary school teacher Kannammal took notes for him when he was hospitalised for two months. Her affection and love demonstrated her dedication to the profession and many teachers like her had made his life meaningful.

NIT-T Director Mini Shaji Thomas, who conferred the Doctor of Letters on Mr.Chandrasekaran, said the institute has been ranked the best among the 31 NITs and eleventh among all engineering institutions in the country under the National Institutional Ranking Framework-2017.
