Aavin Tiruchi set to start curd production

Will be sold through agents, 42 parlours in 4 districts

Aavin Tiruchi plans to roll out packaged curd from next month, based on feedback from milk agents that the value-added product will be patronised well.

The agents have for long been urging Aavin authorities for supply of curd at competitive rate.

In all probability, curd packed in cups will be sold through its agents and 42 parlours across Tiruchi, Karur, Perambalur and Ariyalur districts, and the two hi-tech parlours in Tiruchi, from August, V. Subbu, District Revenue Officer and General Manager of Aavin Tiruchi, told The Hindu .

Procurement of cups for the purpose is in progress, Ms. Subbu said.

Quantum to be decided

Aavin has so far been producing curd through its centres in Erode, Salem and Madurai. Aavin Tiruchi has hitherto been procuring butter milk from the Salem centre for supply to consumers during summer months. The quantum of curd production has not yet been decided, the senior official said.

The hi-tech parlour at Perambalur for which construction work is in progress is likely to get functional during September.

Hi-tech parlours

The two hi-tech parlours in Tiruchi at Kottapattu and Ariyamangalam serve as the sale points for ghee, butter, paneer, milk shakes, and cheese.

The average daily procurement from the 699 milk societies, including over 300 in Tiruchi district, is in the range of 4.4 lakh litres. Of this, the local sales touch the 1.2 lakh litre mark.

Two lakh litres are transported to Chennai and surroundings every day, and the rest is processed for manufacture of skimmed milk powder, khova, ghee, cheese, milk shakes and other products to the value of Rs. 85 lakh every day.

Two tonnes each khova and ghee are manufactured daily.

Storage capacity

Aavin's Tiruchi unit has comfortable storage capacity — upto four lakh litres in its main centre in Tiruchi, one lakh litres at the Padalur Dairy and 50,000 litres each in the chilling centres at Perambalur, Manapparai and Karur.
