MCI approves additional MBBS seats at KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College in Trichy

The Medical Council of India (MCI) has given approval for 50 additional MBBS seats at KAP Viswanatham Government Medical College (KAPVGMC) in Trichy. The college can admit 150 students in the 2015-16 academic year.

Uncertainty had been prevailing over getting approval from theMCI after the Tamil Nadu government decided to increase the seats from 100 to 150 in 2013-14.

MCI teams inspected the college and the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital (the college is attached to the hospital) several times and raised concern about some issues, including shortage of manpower.

The MCI gave recognition in 2014-15 after after the state government had given an undertaking that it would fulfil the requirements.

An MCI team visited the college in February this year and advised the state government to increase the number of faculty to ensure quality education. State health department officials worked to overcome the issues.

An MCI team again inspected the college in May and apparently recommended approval for additional seats.
