One-km pedestrian corridor to come up in four months
A pedestrian corridor between Amma Mandapam bathing ghat on the Cauvery
river and Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple in Srirangam, sanctioned by the
State government for benefit of devotees visiting the temple town, is
expected to be in place within the next four months.
The Highways Department, which has been entrusted with the work funded
by the Tourism Department, has commenced civil works on the project.
Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had announced construction of the corridor
as a large number of devotees visiting the town take a holy dip at the
Cauvery river at Amma Mandapam before venturing to offer prayers at the
temple.
The project is being executed at a cost of about Rs.1 crore, sanctioned
by the Tourism Department. The corridor would run for a length of about
one km, along the Amma Mandapam Road on the left side.
According to sources, the covered pathway would have a slightly raised
platform from ground level with a width of about 1.8 metres allowing
comfortable movement of devotees. The corridor would be established
without causing any hindrance to households and commercial
establishments or traffic along the road. Gaps would be provided
wherever necessary.
The corridor, however, would not run in single stretch as the road is
narrow on certain stretches. The entire corridor would be covered with
GL roofing sheets, sources said.
