Sibal to lay foundation for IIM-T on January 4

TIRUCHI: Union Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal will lay the foundation stone for Indian Institute of Management–Tiruchi (IIM-T) at the site identified for permanent campus adjacent to Bharathidasan University on January 4, 2011, Principal Secretary of Higher Education K. Ganesan said on Friday.

“As far as the state government is concerned, it has fulfilled its responsibility of providing land for creating permanent infrastructure. Now that the foundation is going to be laid, the IIM-Bangalore, the mentoring institution, will see through the start of IIM-Tiruchi from the next academic year,” Mr. Ganesan said, informing that the IIM-Bangalore has also appointed a special officer to monitor the task.

According to official sources, the special officer is expected to assume charge next week.

The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) which would construct the buildings on the about 170 acre site, has levelled a portion in the frontage where the foundation-laying function will be conducted.

After over one year of uncertainty, the hope that IIM-T would start functioning from the 2011-12 academic session was generated last month when an MHRD team visited Tiruchi for the third time for identifying the temporary facilities.

The team led by the Deputy Secretary (Management), Department of Higher Education, MHRD, Sharmila Mary Joseph, and consisting of few others including Professor of Marketing, IIM-Calcutta, Prafulla Agnihotri, who would be assuming charge as the Director of IIM-Tiruchi, visited the National Institute of Technology – Tiruchi (NIT-T) and also took stock of the facilities offered by the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited, Tiruchi.

The final choice has now been made. “The IIM-T will function temporarily from the NIT-T, which would be providing buildings for hostel, classrooms and faculty accommodation,” Prof. Prafulla said.

He added: “The IIM-Bangalore would provide faculty and we would also be looking for teachers.”

This arrangement is on the lines of the start of IIM-Kozhikode temporarily from the premises of NIT-Calicut before it was moved into permanent campus.
