Corporation embarks on anti-encroachment drive

The Tiruchi Corporation took up a major encroachment eviction drive along the West Boulevard Road and Big Bazaar Street in the city on Tuesday. The day long operation, which commenced at around 9 in the morning, was carried out amidst heavy police security.

A second hand book seller, M.Murugesan (63) caused a flutter after threatening to commit self-immolation, protesting the eviction of his roadside shop along the West Boulevard. Police foiled the attempt and took him into custody. A case was registered against him.

Mr.Murugesan was reported to have made similar threats during eviction operations taken up by the Corporation a few years ago.

Unauthorised structures put up by over 20 shop keepers, encroaching on public space, were removed along the two roads during the operation conducted under the supervision of City Engineer Raja Mohamed and Executive Engineer S.Arunachalam. Apart from Corporation earthmovers and workers, a strong posse of policemen were deployed during the operation. The eviction drive comes in the wake of certain changes in traffic movement on the West Boulevard to be implemented by the city police from Wednesday.

Besides, the Corporation has also planned to widen the entire West Boulevard Road stretch, with road medians, at a cost of over Rs.3 crore, sources said.
