Mayiladuturai – Villupuram BG work to be over

TIRUCHI: Broad gauge conversion work in the 122 kilometre Mayiladuturai – Villupuram main line section are in the advanced stage of completion and the trial run of loco is expected to be conducted by this month-end.

Works on the Villupuram - Cuddalore and Sirkazhi - Mayiladuturai sections are already over and the stretch between Cuddalore - Sirkazhi alone is pending on this project, being executed by the Rail Vikas Nigam Limited.

The BG works in the Cuddalore – Sirkazhi section could not be completed as per schedule, owing to the delay in the construction of 2-km-long bridge across the Coleroon river.

The construction of the Coleroon bridge is nearing completion. Nineteen of the 21 spans of this bridge had already been erected. The rest two spans will be erected shortly. Once this work is over, the BG track will be laid and an engine can go from one end of the bridge to another, the Divisional Railway Manager, S. Subrahmanyan told The Hindu.

The mandatory inspection by the Commissioner for Railway Safety (CRS) has been planned by August and the regular services are expected to be operated on this track by October after obtaining his clearance, the DRM said.

The completion will enable restoration of the trains on the main line from Tiruchi to Chennai Egmore via Thanjavur, Kumbakonam, Mayiladuturai, Chidambaram and Cuddalore.
