Bharathidasan Institute of Management will celebrate its silver jubilee
CHENNAI: The Bharathidasan Institute of Management will celebrate its silver jubilee by planning its move to a new 12-acre campus at Khajamalai in Tiruchi.
In two years, it hopes to move from its existing home on the Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited grounds to the new campus being developed at a cost of Rs. 50 crore, according to its director M. Sankaran. “We want to give our students their own technologically advanced campus, with facilities that can compare with the best,” said Prof. Sankaran. He said Rs. 20 crore of the budget would come from internal accrual, while the rest would be raised from outside sources. The fees for students, now pegged at Rs. 3 lakh for the two-year MBA programme, would also be increased by 10-15 per cent.
The new campus is the highlight of the jubilee celebrations that take off this weekend, with the student management event Crescita 2008. “From idea to implementation, this is fully by the students,” said Prof. Sankaran. The BIM is one of the two business schools in India to have its event certified by the ISO. Three events—a business plan competition, management simulation game and advertising contest—will be held for students, while 500 corporate teams vie to make it to the finals of BIMQuest, the corporate quiz. Business leaders from a range of sectors will also share their experiences during the event, which is being conducted at a cost of Rs. 10 lakh.
While such events are supposed to prepare students for future jobs, those jobs will be harder to come by in the changed economic situation. In its 25-year history, the BIM has managed a near perfect campus placement. While Prof. Sankaran hoped to maintain that record, he admitted that this year’s scenario would be different. “Last year, 60 companies confirmed [their attendance] for our placements, but 30 went away empty-handed, as students had already taken up jobs…But this year, we may require 60 [companies] to complete placements, as they are all cutting down on requirements.”
